Die Autorinnen und Autoren des Bandes widmen sich vor diesem Hintergrund dem Martyrium als historischem Phänomen. Die epochenübergreifende Perspektive richtet den Blick auf die Ursachen seiner langfristigen Wirkmächtigkeit als Denkfigur. Die spätantiken Grundlagen von Martyriumskonzeptionen und deren Tradition und Vermittlung in Mittelalter und Neuzeit werden ebenso untersucht wie Wandlungsprozesse in der Darstellung der Figur des Märtyrers. Denn über dessen Bedeutung als personifiziertes Glaubensideal bestand über Jahrhunderte hinweg Konsens, auch wenn der Märtyrer gerade in Konfliktsituationen von konkurrierenden Parteien als Leitfigur instrumentalisiert werden konnte. So eröffneten sich vielfältige Perspektiven der Adaption und Rekontextualisierung des Martyriums, die in den einzelnen Beiträgen ergründet werden.
