Weltkriegs inklusive seiner Vor- und Nachgeschichte bei Künstlern, Schriftstellern und Wissenschaftlern in Deutschland und Österreich. Beginnend mit der Vorkriegsatmophäre in Wien, München und Berlin über die Reaktionen und Positionen zu Kriegsausbruch und -verlauf und die künstlerische Verarbeitung von Fronterfahrungen bis zu den Reaktionen auf Kriegsende und Friedensschluss zeichnet Bruendel mit oft wörtlich zitierten Äusserungen und Werkausschnitten ein sehr plastisches Bild, wie vielstimmig die künstlerische und geistige Elite von George Grosz über Thomas Mann bis Max Weber (und auch weniger bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten) auf diese weltgeschichtliche Herausforderung reagierte. Bildbelege fehlen leider. Literatur nur in den Anmerkungen, und das unbrauchbare feuilletonistische Inhaltsverzeichnis lässt die fehlenden Register noch schmerzlicher vermissen. Ernst Pipers kulturgeschichtlicher Ansatz (2013) ist weiter gefasst. (2)
