Der Münchner Professorin Hartmann gelingt mit diesem Band aus der Beck'schen Reihe nicht nur ein allgemein verständlicher Einstieg in die 300-jährige Geschichte dieser Dynastie, sondern auch eine ebenso allgemein interessierende Darstellung der Gesellschaft, Wirtschaft und Kultur des 6. bis 8. Jahrhunderts in Westeuropa. Sie entgeht sowohl der Gefahr, die durch diese Reihe angesprochene Leserschaft mit Kontroversen aus der Forschung zu langweilen, als auch mit der Terminologie des Historikers zu überfordern. Deshalb ist dieser populär geschriebene Abriss in öffentlichen Bibliotheken noch vor den in der Literaturliste des Bandes genannten kompakten Einführungen von Matthias Becher: "Merowinger und Karolinger" (BA 9/09) und Eugen Ewig: "Die Merowinger und das Frankenreich" (hier zuletzt ID 38/01, 5., von Ulrich Nonn ergänzte Auflage 2006) einsetzbar.
