Dabei verstand sie es geschickt, die Besonderheiten eines geteilten Landes für ihre Zwecke auszunutzen. Nach der Wiedervereinigung musste sich die bundesdeutsche Justiz mit diesem Kapitel deutscher Geschichte intensiv auseinandersetzen. Ausgehend von den hierbei gewonnenen Erkenntnissen untersucht die vorliegende Studie zunächst systematische eine wesentliche Gruppe der damaligen Akteure: Bundesbürger, die sich als inoffizielle Mitarbeiter in den Dienst der DDR-Spionage stellten. Dabei tritt einerseits die Trivialität der Spionage immer wieder überraschend zutage. Andererseits zeigt sich, dass die "Westarbeit" des DDR-Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit über die klassische Spionagetätigkeit weit hinausging, weshalb auch auf die Opfer der DDR-Spionage hingewiesen wird. Anhand erstmals ausgewerteter Quellen aus dem Archiv des Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit kann schließlich gezeigt werden, dass der spürbare politische und wirtschaftliche Niedergang der DDR in den achtziger Jahren auch die geheimdienstliche Westarbeit vor zunehmende Probleme stellte. Auch einige bekannte Spionagefälle erscheinen so in einem neuen Licht. Das mit so vielen Mythen behaftete Thema wird somit auf angenehme und kompetente Weise demystifiziert.
