Dennoch gab es in den 60er Jahren eine Reihe von eigenständigen Denkversuchen, etwa Robert Havemanns antidogmatisches Aufbegehren in seinen Universitätsvorlesungen von 1963/64. Ausführliche Beiträge des Buches sind solchen Ansätzen wie auch den führenden DDR-Philosophen jener Zeit - Georg Klaus, Hermann Ley und Wolfgang Heise - gewidmet. Damit soll das breite Spektrum von bemerkenswerten philosophischen Denkversuchen in Erinnerung gerufen werden, die nach dem sowjetischen Einmarsch in die CSSR und dem anschließenden parteiinternen Sturz Walter Ulbrichts fast alle wieder unterbunden wurden
