In diesem Band wird die vergessene Seite des betrieblichen Alltags wieder entdeckt und in Beziehung zu den tatsächlichen Einflussmöglichkeiten der Beschäftigten auf das Geschehen im Betrieb gesetzt. Am Beispiel des gewerkschaftlichen Vertrauensmannes, einer ehrenamtlichen Funktion, verfolgt Renate Hürtgen eine Entwicklung, in der selbst die vom Staat geforderte Partizipation und Interessiertheit der Beschäftigten nicht hergestellt werden konnte. Am Ende war der DDR-Betrieb ein Ort, an dem keine Konflikte offen ausgetragen wurden, die Belegschaft ihre Interessen immer weniger durchsetzen konnte und die sozialen Kompetenzen qualifizierter Arbeiter brachlagen. Nachdrücklich formuliert die Autorin die Bedeutung dieser Defizite für das Scheitern der DDR-Gesellschaft.
