Dabei ging es vor allem um die Ergründung der Motivation für die Zusammenarbeit mit dem MfS und die psychische Verarbeitung nach der Wende. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung stehen die unbewußten Aspekte der geheimen Tätigkeit und die Beweggründe für die Zusammenarbeit. Damit verbunden ist die Frage, welche psychischen Voraussetzungen diese Inoffiziellen Mitarbeiter des MfS mitbrachten. In dem Buch werden nach einer Einführung über den Beitrag der IM zur Sicherung des politischen Systems der DDR 20 psychoanalytisch orientierte Interviews zusammenfassend dargestellt. Im Anschluß an die anonymisierte Einzelfallbeschreibung erfolgt eine Gesamtbeurteilung der untersuchten Probanden. Die Auswertung der Interviews erfolgte in einem Expertenrating mit fünf Psychoanalytikern. Die Erzählungen der Interviewten sind durch ihre nachträgliche Verarbeitung der konspirativen Tätigkeit keine Darstellung der historischen Fakten. Sie sind vielmehr in der gegenwärtigen Lebenssituation konstruierte Geschichten, die u.a. auch dazu dienen, sich zu rechtfertigen. Deshalb werden in einem weiteren Kapitel für einige Probanden vergleichend Akten herangezogen. Die unterschiedlichen Wahrnehmungen von Stasi und IM stehen so einander gegenüber
