Die an der Ereignisgeschichte orientierte Darstellung - was der Zugänglichkeit sehr förderlich ist - versäumt nicht, ausreichend sowohl in den historischen Kontext des Vorderen Orients als auch in die Situation im Abendland einzuführen. Der Autor, der Mittelaltergeschichte in Saarbrücken lehrt, geht nicht auf die europäischen Kreuzzüge gegen muslimische Eroberungen, gegen die heidnischen Slawen und die damit in Zusammenhang stehende Siedlungsbewegung sowie die Expeditionen gegen Häresien (z.B. Albigenserkreuzzug, Hussitenkriege) ein. So umfassend behandelt auch N. Jaspert (BA 11/03) die Kreuzzuggeschichte in der Reihe "Geschichte kompakt" auf gleichem Niveau. Er geht in seinem sehr übersichtlich gegliederten Buch jedoch systematisch vor. Beide Darstellungen sind für den historisch interessierten Leser geeignet. besonders aber auch für Schüler interessant.
