Mehr noch als im früheren Band geht es im neuen nicht nur um Entwicklungen der einzelnen Parteien in der Folge des Wahlkampfes, der Wahlergebnisse und der Regierungsbildung, sondern um die Veränderungsprozesse des Parteiensystems der Bundesrepublik insgesamt. Die Autoren charakterisieren es mit dem Begriff eines "fluiden Fünfparteiensystems". Gerade der für Rot-Grün knappe Wahlausgang wird als Zeichen für Stabilität und moderaten Wandel gedeutet. Die Einzelanalysen bieten eine Fülle interessanter Beobachtungen und überzeugender sozialwissenschaftlicher Einsichten.
