Dabei konnte die unzutreffende Vorstellung das damals verbreitete Ideal einer selbstbewußten mittelalterlichen Stadtgesellschaft verkörpern. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird die Geschichte der Amtskette des Bürgermeisters dargelegt und gefragt, woher die unzutreffende Vorstellung kommt.
