Und bis heute findet diese Zeit eine vergleichsweise geringe Beachtung in der Literatur für einen breiteren Leserkreis. Sehr willkommen ist daher die vorliegende Arbeit von Brandt, Professor für Alte Geschichte an der TU Chemnitz, der es versteht, unter Berücksichtigung der neueren Forschung, die wichtigsten Linien der politischen und Ereignisgeschichte von Diokletian bis Justinian ebenso verständlich wie kurzweilig auf 100 Seiten zusammenzufassen. Personen, Strömungen und Fakten werden gut eingeführt (nur die Isaurier tauchen etwas unvermittelt auf), sodass kaum Vorwissen zur Lektüre notwendig ist. Brandt ergänzt gut aus der "Wissen"-Reihe von C. H. Beck den Band von K. Bringmann: "Römische Geschichte" (BA 7/95) und von R.-J. Lilie: "Byzanz" (BA 6/99). Wie diese bereits für Schüler - aufbauend auf Schülerhilfen wie F. Ausbüttel: "Abiturwissen Griechische und Römische Antike", BA 6/97) - und kleinere Bibliotheken empfehlenswert. Eine umfassende, wissenschaftliche Darstellung bietet A. Demandt (BA 4/99). (2 S) (Olaf Kaptein)
