Lange Zeit galt er in seiner Generation als Ausnahmeerscheinung: als ein Wissenschaftler, der sich, ohne Nationalsozialist gewesen zu sein, mutig und kompromißlos durch die NS-Zeit gebracht hat. Diese Deutung seiner Biographie ist revisionsbedürftig. Karl Dietrich Erdmann hat - das steht außer Zweifel - nach 1945 einen erheblichen und wichtigen Beitrag zum demokratischen Neuaufbau der Bundesrepublik geleistet. Er war Sekretär der deutschen UNESCO-Sektion, Vorsitzender des deutschen Bildungsrats, Vorsitzender des Verbands deutscher Historiker und Vorsitzender des Comité International des Sciences Historiques. Die Autoren dieses Buches zeigen, daß Erdmann sich nicht nur auf Kompromisse mit dem NS-Regime eingelassen hat, sondern daß er, bei mancher Einzelkritik am Nationalsozialismus, wichtige Grundsätze dieser Ideologie akzeptiert und sie historisch legitimiert hat. Stets beurteilte Erdmann die Tätigkeit jener akademischen Kollegen mit großer Strenge, die sich mit dem NS-Regime eingelassen hatten. Wenn man bedenkt, wie sehr Erdmann als Mann bewundernswerter Standhaftigkeit stilisiert wurde, wird sein Umgang auch mit seinem eigenen Verhalten während der NS-Zeit zu einer Frage der Glaubwürdigkeit der Geschichtswissenschaft. Die Autoren: Roland Thimme Dr.phil., Jg. 1931, ist seit 1961 im Auswärtigen Amt in der Internationalen Historikerkommission zur Herausgabe der Akten zur deutschen auswärtigen Politik 1918-1945 tätig, zuletzt als geschäftsführender deut-scher Hauptherausgeber. Martin Kröger Dr.phil., Jg. 1960, ist ebenfalls Mitglied der Internationalen Historiker-kommission und Mitherausgeber der Zeitschrift Geschichte in Köln.
