Vorangestellt sind die verschiedenen Personengruppen im Bürgerspital, und es wird ein Eindruck von der Kultur der reichen Wiener Kaufleute und Finanzmakler des späten Mittelalters vermittelt. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt der Darstellung ist der Wandel der mittelalterlichen Strukturen im letzten Drittel des 15. Jahrhunderts, als das Bürgerspital immer stärker unter städtische Kontrolle kam
