|a Die britische Schießpulvermühle Waltham Abbey deckte während der napoleonischen Kriege etwa ein Drittel des britischen Gesamtbedarfes an Schießpulver ab. Ein mikrogeschichtlicher Ansatz untersucht, wie die dort beschäftigten Handwerker Wissen erwarben und weitergaben. Zehntausende Briefwechsel zwischen dem Beschaffungsdepartment des Office of Ordnance und der Pulvermühle dienen als Quellen, die durch ihre Quantität und Detailfülle den Berufsalltag in der Pulvermühle minutiös beleuchten. Die Auswertung zeigt, dass die Handwerker eine störungsarme Produktion sicherstellten, auf die sie selbstbewusst und eigenständig Einfluss nahmen. Dank ihrer exzellenten Arbeit erzielten sie sozialen Aufstieg, während ihre Vorgesetzten gezielt die Vermittlung und Weitergabe von Wissen förderten. Die Untersuchung trägt somit zur historischen Erforschung von Arbeitspraktiken im Übergang von der frühneuzeitlichen Manufaktur zur industriellen Revolution bei.
