|a Es gibt viele gute Gründe, an der Existenz von Gesetzen der Geschichte zu zweifeln, aber wie sieht es mit Erfahrungen oder Lehren aus? Christoph Schmidt versucht, solche Schlüsse vor allem aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zu ziehen. Was mit einem gescheiterten Frieden begann, setzte sich mit der Aggression der Nazis zunächst nach innen und ab 1939 auch nach außen fort. Die 33 Lektionen, die Schmidt formuliert und erläutert, dienen dem Überdenken der eigenen Perspektive auf das Phänomen Krieg ebenso wie als Mahnung, aus den dunkelsten Erfahrungen früherer Generationen eine Lehre zu ziehen: „Erinnern ist gut, beherzigen ist besser“. Christoph Schmidt hat Geschichte und Slawistik studiert. Von 2000 bis 2020 war er Professor und Leiter der Abteilung für Osteuropäische Geschichte am Historischen Institut der Universität zu Köln.

|a There are many good reasons to doubt the existence of laws of history, but what about experience and lessons learned? Christoph Schmidt attempts to draw such conclusions, primarily from the Second World War. What began with a failed peace continued with Nazi aggression, first internally and then, from 1939, externally. The 33 lessons that Schmidt formulates and explains serve to rethink our own perspective on the phenomenon of war and remind us to learn a lesson from the darkest experiences of previous generations: “Remembering is good, heeding is better”. Christoph Schmidt studied history and Slavic Studies. From 2000 to 2020 he was Professor and Head of the Department of Eastern European History at the Institute of History at the University of Cologne.
