|a Die Berliner Afrika-Konferenz von 1884/1885 war und ist ein umstrittenes Ereignis von globaler Bedeutung. Auf Einladung des deutschen Reichskanzlers Otto von Bismarck und des französischen Ministerpräsidenten Jules Ferry trafen sich Botschafter 13 europäischer Mächte und der USA in Berlin, um über Handelsfreiheit auf den Flüssen Niger und Kongo, Behinderung des Sklavenhandels sowie Bedingungen territorialer Aneignung und internationaler Konfliktregulierung zu verhandeln. 140 Jahre danach beleuchtet der Sammelband die Interessen einiger an der Konferenz beteiligter Akteure. Vor allem aber fragen die Aufsätze nach den Folgen der Konferenz für die Regionen Afrikas, die Gegenstand der Verhandlungen waren – deren staatliche Einheiten indes keinen Anteil an diesen Verhandlungen hatten
