|a Gottlieb von Jagow (1863–1935), einer der ›großen Unbekannten‹ in der Führungsriege der spätwilhelminischen Zeit, gehörte zu der Handvoll Persönlichkeiten, die den Kriegseintritt Deutschlands 1914 entschieden. Am Beispiel des Chefs des Auswärtigen Amts wird die Einbindung ehemals Verantwortlicher in die geschichtspolitischen Debatten der Weimarer Zeit um die Kriegsschuldfrage und in die Strategie der Regierung zur Revision von Versailles herausgearbeitet. 247 bisher ungedruckte Dokumente belegen die Zusammenarbeit Jagows mit dem Auswärtigen Amt nach 1918 in einem politisch-intellektuellen Netzwerk von Diplomaten, Historikern und Publizisten, ergänzt um einen ausführlichen Lebenslauf. Jagow vertrat die Auffassung, dass nicht Deutschland, sondern Russland den Krieg entfesselt habe und von seinen Verbündeten nicht zurückgehalten worden sei. Vor allem im Briefwechsel mit Vertrauten räumte er auch Fehler auf deutscher Seite ein, übte Kritik und Selbstkritik, blieb aber insgesamt auf der ›offiziellen Linie‹. / »Gottlieb von Jagow and the war guilt question, 1918–1935«: Gottlieb von Jagow (1863–1935), Germany’s top diplomat between 1913 and 1916, was a major figure in the debate on German war guilt. In 247 documents this book presents his virtually unknown activities after 1918 in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as his wide network of diplomats, historians, and publicists. They also illustrate Jagow’s role as an archetypical figure of the former Prussian-German imperial representatives. These documents allow for a clearer, more focused analysis of events and figures and offer new insight about Jagow himself.
