Drawing on Leibniz's and his peers' extensive correspondence in French, Latin, and German, Audrey Borowski situates Leibniz within the context of the intellectual effervescence of late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century European cultural debates, ranging from Orientalism, Cartesianism, to the ongoing Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns. She seeks to depict how Leibniz was known to his contemporaries, rather than as he came to be known by later generations, and to rediscover him as a human - all too human - figure"--
