Dieses Bild einer "Zustimmungsdiktatur" stellt Peter Longerich, einer der renommiertesten Historiker des Nationalsozialismus und Autor zahlreicher Bestseller, in seinem neuen Buch infrage. Auf der Basis von vielen tausend zeitgenössischen Berichten von verschiedenen Dienststellen der NS-Diktatur und jenen des sozialistischen Exils, die bisher in ihrer Gesamtheit noch nicht ausgewertet wurden, legt Longerich die erste Gesamtdarstellung der Volksstimmung im Dritten Reich vor. Sie zeigt, dass die Unzufriedenheit mit dem Regime in der Bevölkerung viel größer war als bisher angenommen. In sämtlichen Bevölkerungsgruppen, von den Bauern über die Arbeiterschaft bis zur bürgerlichen Mitte, war sie weit verbreitet – die "Volksgemeinschaft" erweist sich somit vor allem als ein Mythos der NS-Propaganda.
