|a Rudolf Graf von Stillfried-Alcántara, 1804 in Hirschberg geboren und 1882 auf seinem niederschlesischen Rittergut Silbitz gestorben, entstammte einem alten böhmisch-schlesischen Adelsgeschlecht. Der Thronwechsel des Jahres 1840 in Preußen eröffnete ihm eine glänzende Karriere am Berliner Hof. König Friedrich Wilhelm IV., der einen ausgeprägten Sinn für traditionelles monarchisch-dynastisches Zeremoniell besaß, berief seinen Vertrauten erst zum höfischen Zeremonienmeister, 1853 dann zum Oberzeremonienmeister, ferner zum Leiter des neugeschaffenen und mit Adelsangelegenheiten aller Art befassten Heroldsamtes (1855) sowie zum Direktor des Königlichen Hausarchivs (1856). In diesen Funktionen war der Katholik Stillfried, auch unter dem Nachfolger Wilhelm I., über Jahrzehnte hinweg eine zentrale Figur für dynastische Geschichtsschreibung, Traditionspflege und Erinnerungspolitik. Dokumentiert ist das Wirken des Berliner Hof- und Staatsbeamten nicht zuletzt in seinen Tagebüchern, die er, mit außergewöhnlicher Akribie und Kontinuität, bis wenige Wochen vor seinem Tod geführt hat. Mit ihren täglichen, teils sehr intimen Beobachtungen, Reflexionen und Gedanken eröffnen die Tagebücher Stillfrieds vielfältige Einblicke in die höfisch-adelige Lebenswelt des 19. Jahrhunderts. Für die kulturhistorische Forschung stellen sie eine Quelle von außergewöhnlichem Wert dar. "The Diaries of the Bohemian-Silesian Nobleman Rudolf Count of Stillfried-Alcántara (1827-1882)": Rudolf Count von Stillfried-Alcántara (1804-1882) came from an old Bohemian-Silesian noble family. The enthronement of Frederick William IV opened up a brilliant career for him at the Berlin court. For decades Stillfried was a central protagonist of dynastic historiography, the cultivation of tradition and the politics of remembrance. His activities are documented in his 32 diaries, which he wrote until a few weeks before his death. His observations, which are as everyday as they are very intimate, provide diverse insights into aristocratic life in the 19th century.
