|a Raphael Lemkin, der polnisch-jüdische Vater der UN-Völkermordkonvention von 1948, sah auch in der Vertreibung von 14 Millionen Deutschen am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges einen Genozid. Dieser begann für ihn nicht erst bei der physischen »Ausrottung« ganzer Völker, sondern bedeutete vielmehr »Zerstörung nationaler Gruppen als solcher« in ihrer sozialen Existenz. Der Deutsche Bundestag schloss sich bei dem Beitritt zur UN-Konvention 1954 von der CDU bis zur SPD Lemkins breitem Genozidbegriff an. -- Mit wachsender Bedeutung des Holocausts in der Erinnerungskultur wurden später in Deutschland Völkermord und Judenvernichtung zeitweilig gleichgesetzt. Der Boom der Kolonialismus-Bewältigung führte jedoch erneut zu einem Begriffswandel. 2021 erkannte die Bunderegierung den Genozid an den Herero im früheren Deutsch-Südwestafrika an. Im vergleichenden Blick bis hin zu Putins Krieg gegen die ukrainische Nation heute diskutiert das Buch die »zwei Gesichter« des Genozids zwischen Ausrottung und Zerstörung. / »The Two Faces of Destruction. Rafael Lemkins UN-Genocide-Convention and the Expulsion of the Germans«: For the father of the UN Genocide Convention of 1948, Raphael Lemkin, the expulsion of Germans from parts of Eastern Europe could also be considered a genocidal »destruction of national groups as such«. When the German Bundestag joined the UN Convention in 1954, it adopted Lemkin's perspective. With the growing importance of the Holocaust in the culture of remembrance, genocide was temporarily equated with »extermination« and the annihilation of Jews. However, the term has now expanded again in the context of addressing the issue of colonialism.
