Insbesondere rechtsextreme Kräfte bekämpften die Demokratie, es fanden Putschversuche statt und Attentate auf politische Gegner. Aber auch von links wurde die Republik angegriffen. Zugleich gelang es jedoch, die Demokratie vorübergehend zu stabilisieren und sie gegen ihre Feinde zu verteidigen. Im vorliegenden Band werden in einzelnen thematischen Sondierungen die unterschiedlichen Facetten politisch motivierter Gewalt gegen die republikanische Ordnung behandelt. In der Zusammenschau wird die gewalthafte Polarisierung und Verrohung der politischen Kultur und des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens in der Konstituierungsphase der Weimarer Republik sichtbar.
