|a „Unhappy is a society that has run out of words to describe what is going on“, schrieb Daniel Bell 1973 in „The Coming of Post-Industrial Society“ (S. 294). Bell war diesbezüglich um Worte nicht verlegen, und hier liegt die historische Relevanz des Buches: Es handelt sich um einen bis heute einflussreichen Versuch, einen tiefgreifenden gesellschaftlichen Wandel westlicher Industriegesellschaften zu beschreiben und intellektuell zu erfassen, während er sich noch vollzog. Bell, der sich schon in seiner Studienzeit als „Spezialist für Generalisierungen“ bezeichnet hatte, wagte damit den großen Wurf, ordnete gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in weiter Perspektive historisch ein und identifizierte langfristige Trends. Die zukünftige Gesellschaft werde eine postindustrielle sein, und die USA hätten diese Schwelle zum Beginn der 1970er-Jahre bereits überschritten. Unter den zeitgenössischen gesellschaftstheoretischen Gegenwartsdiagnosen und Zukunftsentwürfen nimmt Bells Konzept der postindustriellen Gesellschaft auch deshalb eine Sonderstellung ein, weil es sich umgehend als ein bekanntes, wenn auch verkürzendes Schlagwort etablierte.
