|a Die Frühe Neuzeit war eine Zeit tiefgreifender gesellschaftlicher, kirchlicher und geistesgeschichtlicher Umbrüche. Die vorliegende Studie stellt dar, wie sich katholische Theologen nach der Reformation an der Reform des theologischen Studiums beteiligten und ihre Wissenschaft neu strukturierten: mit einer renaissance-humanistisch beeinflussten Rezeption scholastischer Methoden, im kritischen Rückgriff auf Thomas von Aquin.Drei Jesuiten und ihre Kommentare zur Summa theologiae dienen als Beispiele für drei verschiedene Ausprägungen dieser Reform: der bibelwissenschaftlich orientierte Francisco de Toledo am Römischen Kolleg der Gesellschaft Jesu in den 1560er-Jahren; der kontroverstheologisch geprägte Gregorio de Valencia im bayerischen Ingolstadt in den 1580er-Jahren; der philosophisch interessierte Gabriel Vázquez im spanischen Alcalá in den 1590er-Jahren.Thematische Detailstudien werden mit systematischen Perspektiven verknüpft, in denen unter anderem methodologische Fragen und die Rolle der Geschichte in damaliger und heutiger Theologie diskutiert werden. So kommt es über die geschichtliche und kulturelle Distanz hinweg zu einem Dialog, der die Relevanz theologiegeschichtlicher Forschung für die systematische Theologie erweist
