|a Gustav Bachmann war ein Zeitzeuge der Entwicklung der Kaiserlichen Marine von 1876 bis 1918 und 1915 als Chef des Admiralstabes eine wichtige Person bei den Diskussionen um den uneingeschränkten U-Bootkrieg. Die für die Familie ab den 1920er Jahren geschriebenen und bisher nicht zugänglichen Lebenserinnerungen sind ein faszinierendes Zeugnis nicht nur über die Entwicklung der Kaiserlichen Marine ab 1876, ihre Organisation, Einsätze im Ausland und den Kolonien, die Ausbildung der Offiziere, einzelne Offiziere und den Einfluss Alfred v. Tirpitz’ als Staatssekretär des Reichsmarineamtes. Auch die Zeit des 1. Weltkriegs, als Bachmann Chef der Marinestation der Ostsee und für einige Monate Chef des Admiralstabes war, sowie das Ende der Marine im Oktober/November 1918 werden von Bachmann als Zeitzeuge geschildert. Das Tagebuch 1915 beschreibt im Detail die heftigen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den führenden Marineoffizieren und Reichskanzler Theobald v. Bethmann-Hollweg sowie Kaiser Wilhelm II
