Sie zeigt zwei akademische Akteure, die in hochschulreformerischen Aufbruchszeiten über Universitätsgründungen und Interdisziplinarität diskutieren – und zwei sensible Gelehrte, die sich über zentrale Aspekte ihrer Forschung zu verständigen suchen: Begriffsgeschichte und Metaphorologie, den Fortschritt und die Machbarkeit der Geschichte sowie die lange Debatte zur Säkularisierung, in der sie anfangs gegensätzlich positioniert waren. Der Philosoph und der Historiker lernen sich 1963 beim ersten Kolloquium der Forschungsgruppe »Poetik und Hermeneutik« kennen, wirken bald darauf für einige Jahre an der neu gegründeten Ruhr-Universität Bochum und engagieren sich beim Aufbau der Universität Bielefeld. Dann jedoch trennen sich ihre Wege: Während sich Blumenberg immer mehr aus der Öffentlichkeit zurückzieht, um ungestört seine großen Monographien schreiben zu können, bleibt Koselleck nicht nur als Herausgeber der Geschichtlichen Grundbegriffe vom Wissenschaftsbetrieb absorbiert. Diese Diskrepanz verleiht ihrem Gipfelgespräch seine eigentümliche Grundstimmung.
