There is some evidence arguing in favour of his Roman citizenship: first, there is his name, corresponding to Latin Egnatius; second, his transfer from Antioch to Rome in connection with special claims to jurisdiction by the highest legal authority; and third, his astonishing knowledge of the official Latin language. In the framework of Antioch society, Ignatius' family or ancestors sought out the option to be granted the Roman franchise. |
