Eine Emigration schließt er zu diesem Zeitpunkt aus – wie andere auch verkennt er, in welcher politischen Lage Deutschland sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits befindet. Die Angriffe in der Presse des Dritten Reichen gegen ihn nehmen zu und Fallada muss erkennen, dass er unter diesen Verhältnissen nicht mehr von Menschen erzählen kann, denen man es anmerkt, dass sie einmal am „Abgrund gelegen“ und die das „Zusammenstürzen ihrer ganzen Vergangenheiten erlebt haben“. Obwohl er ein unerwünschter Autor wird, können seine Romane weiter erscheinen, allerdings bringen die Verhältnisse ihn wiederholt in krisenhaften Situationen. Auf Vermittlung einer Bekannten erreicht ihn 1943 das Angebot, als Reichsarbeitsdienst-Sonderführer für sechs Monate im Rahmen der kulturellen Truppenbetreuung in das besetzte Frankreich aufzubrechen. Der Weg führt ihn von Paris, wo er auf dem Schwarzmarkt einkauft, über Bordeaux bis an die spanische Grenze. Wie Fallada den Reichsarbeitsdienst, das besetzte Frankreich und die Stimmung in Land erlebt, darüber geben die bislang unveröffentlichten Briefe Auskunft. Fallada schreibt die Briefe zwischen Mai und September 1943 an seine Frau Suse, die ihm sporadisch antwortet und aus dem heimischen Carwitz über Fliegerangriffe und erste Entbehrungen berichtet. Mit dieser Edition wird eine der letzten Lücken in Hans Falladas spannungsreicher Biographie geschlossen.
