Bereits 1932 wurde Ilse Koch (1906-1967) Mitglied der NSDAP, 1936 heiratete sie den späteren Kommandanten von Buchenwald. 1947 stand sie in Deutschland vor einem US-Gericht, 1950/51 vor einem deutschen Gericht, das sie zu lebenslanger Haft verurteilte. Ausgiebig berichtete die internationale Presse über die als besonders grausam geltende "Hexe von Buchenwald". Von der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus über den Prozess bis zum Suizid 1967 in der Haft rekonstruiert Alexandra Przyrembel die unterschiedlichen Erzählungen über Ilse Koch. Dabei zeigt sie, welche Vorstellungen von Gewalt, Geschlecht und Schuld sich darin kristallisieren und warum. Für die Nachkriegsgesellschaften wird klar: Je grausamer Ilse Koch geschildert wurde, desto mehr konnten Deutsche sich von ihr distanzieren und sich selbst entschulden. Eine kluge, erhellende Studie über das personalisierte Böse, das außerhalb der menschlichen Sphäre verortet wird
