Genährt werden diese Bilder heute aus Fernsehdokumentationen, Themenschwerpunkten in Nachrichten- und Geschichtsmagazinen und musealen Darstellungen – sowie aus dem Schulunterricht. Wer sich jedoch auf die Suche nach dem Ursprung dieser Vorstellungen begibt, wird schnell bemerken, dass sie jüngeren Datums sind – und nicht über zweitausend Jahre konserviertes Wissen repräsentieren. Tatsächlich setzte erst im Humanismus langsam ein Interesse an "den Germanen" an, angetrieben durch die Lektüre des römischen Dichters Tacitus. Sein Buch Germania beflügelte die Fantasie, wer und wie "diese Germanen" wohl gewesen seien. Im 19. Jahrhundert, vor allem im Rahmen der deutschen Nationalbewegung, werden "die Germanen" dann zum Identifikationspunkt der Deutschen und Referenzrahmen zur Bestimmung, was deutsch sei. Hier liegt der Ursprung jener Germanenideologie, die durch die sogenannte Völkische Bewegung und durch die Nationalsozialisten schließlich radikalisiert wurde – und die jene Zäsur von 1945 zunächst weitgehend unbeschadet überstand. Renommierte Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler – Archäologinnen, Frühhistoriker, Zeitgeschichtlerinnen und Rechtsextremismusexperten – begeben sich auf die Spur, wie diese Germanenideologie entstand, zeigen, wer wie daran mitwirkte und welchen Anteil die Archäologie daran hatte. Sie problematisieren aber auch, dass diese Ideologie noch heute unsere Bilder und unsere Vorstellungen von "den Germanen" bestimmen und einen Bezugspunkt für die extreme Rechte darstellt. Eine Frage aber bleibt: Gab es vor zweitausend Jahren überhaupt Menschen, die sich selbst als "Germanen" begriffen? (Verlagstext)
