Erinnerungsstätten und Gedenktage, Jubiläumsreden und Ausstellungen werden dabei zu Knotenpunkten eines öffentlichen Umgangs mit der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit. So wird die materialreiche Darstellung auch zu einer Geschichte politischer Ethik in Ost und West: Wie haben Erinnerungsgemeinschaften verschiedener Generationen unter je eigenen Bedingungen die Verschwörung gegen Hitler gedeutet, welche programmatischen Ziele verbanden sie mit ihren Gedächtnisakten? Erstaunlich früh wurde der tote Bonhoeffer zu einer Figur kirchlicher Geschichtspolitik.
