Anhand der eingehenden Schilderung von neun symbolträchtigen Tagen werden entscheidende Abschnitte auf dem Weg zur deutschen Einigung unter Preußens Führung vergegenwärtigt: von der Flucht des Welfenkönigs aus Hannover ins österreichische Exil im Juni 1866 bis - nach der Proklamation des deutschen Kaiserreichs im Spiegelsaal von Versailles - zur Siegesparade fünf Jahre später. Das Buch erhält einen 16-seitigen Farbbildteil, der die für die Thesen des Buches wesentlichen Ereignisse der Zeit darstellt
