Les 58 auteurs réunis dans ce volume explorent pour la première fois l'évolution de leur discipline à l'aune des "générations historiennes" qui l'ont façonnée. De Jules Michelet à nos jours... Trois grandes parties forment la trame de cet ouvrage choral. La première fait revivre deux siècles d'historiographie française en dressant le portrait de 14 générations qui se sont succédé depuis le début du XIXe siècle. La deuxième partie donne la parole à une trentaine d'historiennes et historiens nés entre 1942 et 1983, invités à retracer leur propre itinéraire. Ont-ils eu le sentiment d'appartenir ou non à une génération et de s'inscrire en rupture par rapport aux précédentes ? Enfin, à partir d'une quinzaine d'études de cas (la Révolution française, l'histoire coloniale, l'histoire des femmes...), la troisième partie revisite, sous l'angle générationnel, les grands débats qui agitent le champ foisonnant du travail historique.
