| Zusammenfassung: | Apartheid, the policy of complete racial segregation both economically and politically, was practiced by the National Party of the Republic of South Africa and began almost simultaneously with the beginning of West German diplomacy. In 1954, the German Ambassador in Pretoria, Rudolf Holzhausen, thoroughly examined and evaluated the policy of apartheid. He concluded that, from a paternalistic point of view vis a vis non-European South Africa, the theoretical premises of apartheid, namely different races should evolve differently, were not entirely unfounded. However, Holzhausen questioned the practical implementation of apartheid and, unlike other German diplomats in the fifties, condemned the cruelty and injustice with which the government of Pretoria sought to enforce its racist policy.
