520 |a Although well-known as an homme de lettres, Wilhelm Hausenstein's role as the first representative of the Federal Republic of Germany in France has largely been forgotten. Both a victim of persecution during the Hitler regime as well as a connoisseur of French culture, he seemed predestined to restore harmony between the two countries. In 1950 he was selected by Chancellor Adenauer and he reluctantly accepted the difficult position. His design was to pave the way to political understanding by initiating and sustaining an extensive cultural exchange program. With the future in mind, Hausenstein's credibility and unfailing commitment, his courtesy, his perseverance and strong sense of duty enabled him to create a favourable political climate. After he was forced to resign in 1955, he had to accept the fact that his link building diplomacy would not be acknowledged. He died on June 3, 1957 just barely able to support himself and embittered by his government's ingratitude. (Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte / FUB)
