Der niedersächsische Verfassungsschützer Fritz Tobias setzte damals mit Unterstützung des "Spiegel" und anderer Medien die These von der Alleintäterschaft Marinus van der Lubbes in die Welt, die bis heute herrschende Meinung ist. Quellengestützt und mit kritischem Blick auf die Geschichtsschreibung beleuchtet der mehrfach ausgezeichnete amerikanische Historiker die Rolle Tobias' und seiner publizistischen Helfer im Kontext der 1950er- und 1960er-Jahre und spürt zugleich mit peinlicher Akribie den Abläufen selbst nach, untersucht Hintergründe, fragt nach Wirkungen und deckt Verbindungslinien auf. Hett kommt zu Ergebnissen, die bei aller Sorgfalt des immer auch zweifelnden Wissenschaftlers van der Lubbes Alleinschuld infrage stellen und eher auf eine gezielte NS-Aktion hindeuten.
