|a "Hiver 1627. Un vieux manuscrit byzantin abandonne l'ombre protectrice d'un monastère grec. Il quitte les montagnes chypriotes pour le royaume de France. En Méditerranée, il échappe aux pirates barbaresques. À Marseille, il découvre un port où les épices et la soie de l'Orient croisent le drap flamand. Son aventure périlleuse se poursuit sur les routes de Provence jusqu'à Aix où un homme l'attend avec impatience. Cet homme s'appelle Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc (1580-1637). Il recherche sans relâche manuscrits, médailles, antiquités, animaux exotiques. Sans quitter la France, il mène sa traque dans toute l'Europe et le pourtour méditerranéen, depuis les bibliothèques italiennes et londoniennes jusqu'aux monastères du désert au coeur du Sahara. Il s'est constitué le plus important réseau de correspondance de son temps, dialoguant avec d'obscurs marchands ou des chasseurs de trésors, mais aussi avec Gassendi, Mersenne, Galilée, Rubens... En même temps, il oeuvre au centre du pouvoir, auprès de Guillaume du Vair, le garde des Sceaux de Louis XIII et il côtoie 'Francesco Barberini, le neveu du pape Urbain VIII. Pourtant, malgré sa puissance, il n'use de son autorité que pour assouvir sa soif de savoir. Amoureux des livres, la culture est sa seule épouse. Parlementaire, historien, philologue, lettré, Peiresc est un inlassable éveilleur de culture, un intrépide passeur de savoir. Pour son rôle majeur dans la République des Lettres du premier XVIIe siècle, il méritait ce nouvel éclairage qui le fait sortir de l'ombre où l'avait enfermé une modernité parfois injuste."--P.
