|a Klappentext: Entre la déclaration de guerre à l Allemagne le 3 septembre 1939 et l entrée des troupes de la Wehrmacht en France le 10 juin 1940, alors que les états-majors se préparent à l affrontement, les Français prennent progressivement conscience de la réalité de la guerre. Cette période, souvent perçue comme faite d insouciance avant la plongée dans les « années noires », a pourtant bien été un temps de guerre pour la population française. Rares sont les périodes de l histoire récente qui ont suscité autant d idées reçues que les huit premiers mois de la Seconde Guerre mondiale en France. L expression « drôle de guerre », qui s est développée parmi les soldats à l automne 1939, s est imposée pour qualifier une entrée en guerre qui se serait faite « à reculons », par opposition à l été 1914. Pourtant, malgré l absence d offensives d envergure, une étude attentive du quotidien des Français n en montre pas moins que le pays était bien en état de guerre, avec des familles déchirées par la mobilisation, la peur des attaques aériennes soudaines, les déplacements de populations frontalières, et l arrière déjà contraint à de nombreux sacrifices. En se fondant sur des sources encore inexploitées, notamment des archives saisies en Allemagne par les Soviétiques au lendemain de la guerre, Fabrice Grenard s intéresse de près non seulement à la situation militaire et politique de la France mais aussi et surtout à l état d esprit des Français et à la façon dont ils ont vécu ces huit premiers mois du second conflit mondial.
