Zehntausende rassisch und politisch verfolgte Nazigegner und Widerstandskämpfer aus vielen Ländern Europas wurden in diesem Lagerkomplex gequält und durch Zwangsarbeit brutal ausgebeutet, 22.000 von ihnen wurden ermordet. Das Buch ist durchgängig zweisprachig (deutsch/französisch). Es stellt das Lagersystem dar und erklärt dessen Besonderheiten. Ausserdem enthält es zahlreiche eindrucksvolle Fotografien von Martin Graf - neben Augenzeugenberichten von Überlebenden sowie künstlerischen Zeichnungen und literarischen Texten, so etwa von Tomi Ungerer, Bernhard Schlink oder der Komponistin, Sängerin und Schriftstellerin Sylvie Reff
