Rezension: Mitbegründer der Weimarer Republik, SPD-Vorsitzender, Aussenminister und zweimal Reichskanzler - und doch verbindet man den Namen Hermann Müllers heute allenfalls noch mit dem Scheitern der letzten demokratisch gewählten Regierung, bevor die Nazis kamen. Dem versucht diese sehr gut lesbare, durch eine "Spiegel"-Rezension des Ex-SPD-Chefs Schulz geadelte Biografie des emeritierten Hamburger Politologen (vgl. 2012) abzuhelfen. Reichels Lücken füllende, auf breiter Quellen- und Literaturgrundlage erstellte Arbeit beschränkt sich, ohne Blick auf das Privatleben, auf die politische Karriere Müllers, den sie als leidenschaftlichen Demokraten, der sich mit hohem Einsatz in den Dienst von Staat und Partei stellte, in ein neues Licht rückt. Am Ende, 1931, steht Hindenburgs Nein zu einem Staatsbegräbnis, und damit beschliesst Reichel auch eine Geschichte des Scheiterns der Republik. Müller, so seine Bilanz, war wie Stresemann einer der grossen Staatsmänner, die sich dem vergeblich entgegengestemmt haben.
