Rezension: Die beiden leitenden, politik- und zeitgeschichtlich aktiven "Welt"-Journalisten (zuletzt 2018) schildern den Umbruch zwischen Herbst 1918 und Herbst 1919 im Stil einer fesselnden Reportage: als faktendichte Abfolge dramatischer Ereignisse in Staat und Gesellschaft. Schwarz-Weiss-Abbildungen, viele Zitate von Zeitzeugen (leider ohne Register) und Rundblicke in die Provinz, reichern ihre Darstellung an, allerdings fehlen politische Porträts. Als roter Faden dient der Abwehrkampf, den Sozialdemokraten wie Ebert und Noske gegen die radikale Linke führten, die der parlamentarischen Demokratie eine von der Sowjetunion inspirierte (und teils auch finanzierte) Räte-Alternative entgegenstellen wollte. Die Autoren schreiben der SPD die Durchsetzung verfassungsbasierter demokratischer Institutionen zu, unterbelichtet bleibt dabei die Rolle der rechten Paramilitärs und der alten Eliten in Verwaltung, Militär und Wirtschaft. - Differenzierter und analytisch stärker zuletzt J. Käppner (2018) und W. Niess (2017). Neben oder nach diesen dennoch breit einsetzbar. Mit Bibliografie. (2-3)
