Die aus rein machtpolitischen Gründen vorgenommenen Konsul tationen Franz I. führten zu einem Konkordieversuch zur Überwindung der Glaubensspaltung, in dessen Mittelpunkt Melanchthons "Consilium ad Gallos" und die offizielle Einladung des Wittenbergers nach Paris stehen. Wichtigstes Ergebnis ist der auf Grund neuen Quellenmaterials geführte Nachweis, dass Franz I. niemals die neue Lehre gefördert, sondern stets integral an der katholischen Lehre und Disziplin festgehalten hat. Die Konkordieversuche waren nur Manöver, um sich der Unterstützung des Schmalkaldischen Bundes gegen den Kaiser zu versichern. Die "affaire des placards" (1534) tritt in ein neues Licht.
