|a Abstract The last words in the Phänomenologie des Geistes are not Hegel’s own, but rather come from the writings of Schiller. Years later, in his lectures on religion, Hegel still makes use of the same intertextual reference to signify a sublation into the Absolute. As this article shows, a key aspect of Schiller’s early Philosophische Briefe is the anticipation of a philosophy that would reach into the infinite, and Hegel, deeply influenced by Schiller, gestures back to the scene of that anticipation at precisely the moment that he believes himself to fulfill the project Schiller had sketched. In parallel to the Schiller reference, the PhG moreover evokes imagery from the Gospels, while the later religion lectures add a reference to verse by Goethe. These disparate intertexts interact to yield a representation of one of the most elusive moments in Hegel’s thought, one that his own philosophical prose proves unable to capture.
