Résumé:Parents of disabled children faced immense (and often similar) financial hardships and logistical challenges in both German states. In the GDR and in the FRG, caring for a child with a disability was perceived as a threat to the stability of the parental relationship. This article argues that parents in the GDR and the FRG may have had similar problems, but they established different ways of coping with challenges. While these distinct approaches were not direct consequences of ColdWar allegiances, they stemmed from differences in gender ideals, contrasting roles, and the influence of civil society in advocating for the rights of people with disabilities, as well as the acceptance of residential institutions.
