|a Die Mobilisierungskraft der Anti-Apartheid-Bewegungen, die die als rassistisch kritisierte Politik Südafrikas auf die internationale Agenda brachten, ist eines der zentralen Forschungsfelder für die geschichtswissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Apartheid und den Reaktionen in den westlichen Gesellschaften. Während in den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren das Aktionsrepertoire der Anti-Apartheid-Bewegungen von Straßenkampagnen und Informationsarbeit geprägt war, wandelte sich in den 1980er-Jahren das Auftreten der US-amerikanischen und europäischen Apartheid-Gegner. Besonders das britische Anti-Apartheid Movement und sein Umfeld hatten erheblichen Anteil an der Etablierung des »Protest[es] gegen die Apartheid als Teil der Massenkultur insbesondere in der Musik«.
